The Last Of Us film announced!
I am pleased to bring you the news that one of the greatest video games will actually become a film!! Screen Gems is teaming up with the creative director Neil Druckmann who will write the screenplay and Sam Raimi with Ghost Productions will produce the film. The Last of us has received critical praise and numerous awards, and IGN rated this game a 10.0 which in their terms is considered a Masterpiece and holds a rating of 9.8 on IMDb. “Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to my attention insisting we go after it, and when I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay,” stated Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper.
“Set in a post-apocalyptic environment, “The Last of Us” visits decimated cities where a fungus has transformed the population into zombies. Twenty years after the outbreak, smuggler Joel is hired to protect 14-year-old Ellie and escort her across the dangerous wasteland. On the journey, the two form a powerful emotional bond.”
My family were not interested in hearing my overly exuberant fascination about this game and the possibilities with how great this movie could turn out to be. I believe this has all the qualities of breaking the streak of poor game adaptations into films. The main reason being the quality of the story telling. The creators of this game were heavily influenced by Children of Men and No Country For Old Men. That’s how the world and cinematography was like in the game. The storytelling is possibly the best thing about the game. The actual game play was brutal intertwined with beauty, but the main love for the game comes in Joel & Ellie’s dysfunctional father-daughter like relationship with one another. You watch Joel slowly grow feelings for this girl, and him having lost his own daughter when the outbreak first began makes it all the more sweeter. The story really pulls on the strings of your heart, it’s great news to hear the creative director will do the screenplay. I’ll post two videos at the end so you can get an idea of layers behind the strong storytelling.
I am planning on doing a review for this game, because it is very much like a movie already, but I want to mention a few aspects for those who haven’t played. I have mentioned the strong storytelling, well essentially the story is that Joel is hired to smuggle this girl to a group called the Fireflies who are looking to find a cure for this disease. The fireflies are much like the Human Project in Children of Men, but in this story we see the remains of many fireflies as they venture across the United States. While travelling through decimated cities & ravaged towns they encounter the Infected. These infected are infected by a fungus like disease which latches it’s self onto the brain and kills the brain cells, they come in four forms, the newly infected are like your typical zombies, They are called Runners and are much like the ones in Dawn of the Dead. Stalkers which are a mix between Runners and Clickers Next up is the most interesting infected which are called Clickers. They have been infected for so long their faces become overran by the fungus. Lastly are your Bloaters, they are the final stage of the fungus infection. They are covered in armor like plates and extremely strong, but rare.
Another great aspect of this game is that along with the Infected you encounter Hunters “You know, as bad as those things are, at least they’re predictable. It’s the normal people that scare me”. They are brutal group of survivors who kill anybody in their way to acquire food, weapons, clothing, and other resources. When you encounter them it usual ends up in a fist fight, or battle with weapons. It is very interactive and unpredictable with what they are planning to do.
There is just unlimited amounts of praise I can give this game. It’s obvious who should play Ellie, a majority of players have said a younger Ellen Page would be the perfect fit for Ellie, so I am rooting for here to take the role, after she worked with the game Beyond Two Souls. For Joel I believe Hugh Jackman is the PERFECT candidate to play Joel. Jackman is able to bring the intensity and compassion that Joel displays over the course of the game. He looks similar to Joel, maybe not as much as some other actors, but the main difference is the quality of acting. The directing should be done by Alfonso Cuaron no question about it. This game’s scope is massive, and Cuaron’s Children of Men already displays quality long takes that are violent and engaging. That is exactly how this game is, and a lot of strategic stealth is implemented into the game play. I could only imagine how perfect the long takes would be for those stealthy kills
I’m waiting for more announcements of this exciting news. I’m hoping we can see this film come out in 2016, and break the idea that game adaptations always fall short. I will post a couple pictures, and cut scenes from the game
